Close reading of French research practice

As demonstrated in the survey, the French journals, with their lower overall score on the meta-proxy generally have a clearly lower degree of explicit claim or problem statements, argument overviews, theory and literature reviews and fewer explicit concluding sections. This is also reflected qualitatively. But while the transnational-American journal articles qualitatively reviewed above also exhibited a very solid trend toward the modern social science research article from the 1960s onward, it can be shown that the French articles, first, have clear dissertational elements in their paratext and argument structure and, second, that these dissertational elements arguably can be seen to interfere with and counter the use of modern social science argument structure elements.

The following examples are meant to show these points concomitantly as they are both part of the French IR research practice in this respect. The examples are structured around three themes in increasing order of importance: first, various uses and functions of allusions are illustrated; then follow examples of how conclusions show or contain evasive manoeuvres in terms of both paratext and main text; finally, a fuller review of examples of problem statements across the decades shows how the dissertational and Lego elements are intertwined and how the former affect the latter.
